A Liminal Space Between the Ocean and the Redwoods

Space Zero is a meeting place where nature, spirituality and science are woven together. We create conditions for interdisciplinary inquiry, through shared kindness, creativity, and the courage to ask.

By bringing scientists, artists, and philosophers into the same space, we cultivate learning that moves across forms; multimedia, embodied, distributed; and support living systems to understand themselves more fully through change.

Space Zero is designed to adapt.

What we do

Lab Zero Where lived experience and scientific curiosity read each other

There is a state before the question forms. Lab Zero takes its name from that state: the generative emptiness from which care, creativity, and understanding arise.

Scientists, artists, and contemplatives gather here to map lived experience into a form the scientific mind can meet, bringing first-person knowing into contact with genuine curiosity and open inquiry. To look clearly where measurement alone cannot go.

Each season, one scientist, one artist, and one philosopher or spiritual teacher enter residency together, in nature, in the lab, at the boundary where inner life becomes a site of discovery. Residencies culminate in exhibition.

The questions that root us:

  • What is the source of care?
  • How does creativity arise in a body, a mind, a community?
  • How does interdependence move through all living things?

The work is translated into learning resources; beautiful, open, accessible; and distributed through our YouTube channel and multimedia platforms, so the inquiry keeps moving.

The Emergent Where the future is sensed before it is named

The Emergent is Space Zero's living community, bringing together researchers, artists, contemplatives, and thinkers from across disciplines to ask what futures are worth building, and what it takes to build them from the source.

The community gathers in two ways:

  • Regular in-person meet-ups in Crescent City
  • An online platform where researchers, thinkers, and artists collaborate inside a space curated with care

Each cycle of conversation, somatic sharing, and interview feeds the next. The work circles a central question: what does benevolent emergence look like, and what would a future genuinely good for human and more-than-human life require of us, now?

Once a year, three seasons of Lab Zero residency gather into the annual Emergent Exhibition, a moment of collective seeing, where inquiry becomes visible to the wider community.

Open Ground Where future builders gather

Space Zero is one node among many. Open Ground tends our place in the wider web, local and global at once.

Locally, we attune to Crescent City: the earth, ocean, and community we are embedded in, and the particular intelligence of this coast.

Globally, we gather with other nodes, not to report but to genuinely exchange.

The questions that orient us:

  • How does a place shape the intelligence that emerges from it?
  • What does it mean for a community to be a living system?
  • Where do frontier technologies and ancient wisdom actually touch?
  • What would it look like for universities, labs, and communities to genuinely learn from each other?

We compare experiences and outcomes, learn from our differences, and open fertile ground for future work together, a living exchange of applied knowledge in which all meet as equals.

The Space Where the mind returns to itself

Space Zero is located on the Northern California coast, where redwoods meet the Pacific, and beauty itself becomes a working condition.

The Space is the physical root of everything: the living base from which Lab Zero's inquiry, The Emergent's community, and Open Ground's exchange all grow.

Think of it as a spiritual gym, a place to train the inner life with the same intention we bring to the body. Four grounds support this:

  • Creativity, a round table for drawing, making, and thinking with the hands
  • Movement, a dedicated area for somatic practice, embodied modalities, and physical renewal
  • Meditation, stillness and grounding, for those who need to go inward
  • Do Nothing, unstructured rest, with no purpose other than to be; perhaps the rarest offering of all

Alongside these, a living library, tea, coffee and quiet spaces for contemplation and gentle conversation.

Biophilic, softly lit, attuned to genuine nervous system recovery, The Space is where busy minds find rest, openness, and nourishment.
